Sustainability & Ethos
At Natalie Borton Designs, sustainability and responsible production isn’t a trend or a promise of perfection. It’s a series of considered choices — from how we source materials, to how much we produce, to the kind of longevity we design for. Our goal is simple: to create fewer, better accessories that are made with care and meant to last. We believe the most responsible things are the ones you reach for again and again.
MATERIALS & ANIMAL WELFARE
Leather as a by-product
We are committed to responsible production and animal welfare. We source our leather through trusted partners who work with hides that are a by-product of the food industry. This means animals are not raised solely for leather; instead, materials that already exist are thoughtfully upcycled into long-lasting goods.
Using by-product leather helps reduce waste and allows us to give natural materials a second life — one that’s shaped by craftsmanship, care, and longevity.
Thoughtful use of natural materials
Leather is a natural material, and like all natural materials, it evolves with time and wear. We embrace that. The patina, softening, and subtle changes that occur with use are part of what makes each piece personal — and part of why we design with durability in mind.
Our leather partners prioritize responsible sourcing practices and initiatives that aim to reduce waste throughout the supply chain.
CRAFTSMANSHIP & PRODUCTION PARTNERS
Craft is central to everything
We work with skilled production partners who understand materials, construction, and the details that make an accessory feel effortless to wear. From leather cutting and stitching to finishing and hardware, each step is handled with intention.
Our leather goods are made in the Los Angeles, supporting experienced makers and shorter supply chains whenever possible. Other products are produced in regions selected specifically for their expertise and quality standards.
Good design is only as strong as the hands that bring it to life — and we choose our partners accordingly, ensuring safe and fair labor conditions and building long term partnerships.
CERTIFICATIONS & STANDARDS
Verified practices, not vague promises
Our leather sourcing partners work with tanneries and suppliers who participate in independently recognized certification systems for environmental responsibility, safety, and ethical production. These standards help ensure accountability across the leather value chain — from raw material sourcing to finished goods.
Below are key certifications associated with the leather we use:
Leather Working Group (LWG)
Provides and maintains audit protocols that assess the environmental compliance and performance of leather manufacturers. LWG standards evaluate water and energy use, chemical management, waste treatment, and traceability — promoting best practices across environmental, social, and governance considerations.
ICEC Certification
Evaluates production processes with a focus on environmental sustainability, health and safety, working conditions, and product quality. ICEC supports continuous improvement while minimizing environmental impact across the supply chain.
OEKO-TEX Leather Standard
A global testing and certification system that ensures leather and leather goods meet strict human-ecological safety requirements. This standard verifies that finished materials are free from harmful substances and safe for everyday wear.
Brazilian Leather Certification of Sustainability (CSCB)
Applies a holistic approach to sustainability, evaluating economic, environmental, and social performance within the leather industry — including improved working conditions, environmental responsibility, and production transparency.
Sustainable Leather Foundation (SLF)
Works across the full leather value chain — from farm to finished product — to promote transparency and responsible practices. The SLF Transparency Dashboard™ gives insight into sustainability performance across environmental, social, and governance pillars.
GIVING BACK
Supporting women, always
Our giving has always centered on supporting and uplifting women — particularly those who are marginalized or vulnerable. We donate a portion of every sale to nonprofit organizations like GenerateHope working directly with survivors of sex trafficking, many of whom are immigrants, reflecting our belief in dignity, safety, and opportunity for all women.
As we look ahead, we’re expanding this commitment to also support Chamber of Mothers, a nonpartisan organization advocating for policies that better support mothers and families. Because caring for women means addressing both immediate needs and the systems that shape their lives.
